4 Steps to Find Your Best Hair Stylist Ever

Time to find a new stylist? Here's how to do it without any stress!

Recently, one of my friends told me she was moving across the country. The very next item we discussed was the answer to her question: “How do I find another stylist who knows what they’re doing?”

This can be a challenge, no doubt.

In Dressing Your Truth, you know how important a good hairstyle is. It can make or break your whole look! Whether you’re just getting started with DYT, or you’ve had a great Type-specific hairstyle for years, the idea of finding someone who knows how to give you the hair you want can feel slightly overwhelming.

Maybe your stylist is the one moving out of town. Maybe you just need to find someone new because you aren’t happy with the results you’re getting with your current stylist.

Whatever the case may be, something great is coming for you.

Here are my top 4 ways to find a stylist you love!

1. Set the intention.

First, set the intention that you can easily find a hairstylist who co-creates beautiful hair AND a beautiful experience with you. It’s amazing what great intentions can do!

Ask yourself:

What do I want to experience?
What would be my ideal situation?

Whatever that is, write it down in present tense, using positive, affirmative language. Here’s an example:

“I am excited that I’m finding a new hairstylist who will work with me to create what I want for my hair!”

Believe you will have this, and your whole experience will begin to shift to affirm this back to you.

Take it a step further and do this powerful Hair Clearing. In just 8 minutes, I teach you how to step into the driver’s seat of your life when it comes to speaking up and creating the hair experience you want.

TYPE TIP:

Type 3’s and 4’s: pay extra attention to this first step! If you’ve had a bad hair experience in the past, you may default to your “I’ll do it myself” or “all-or-nothing” approach and start cutting your own hair. (I’ve seen so many Type 3 and Type 4 women do this!)

2. Prep for your appointment.

Yep, even if you don’t have one scheduled yet! Act as if you have found the perfect stylist, and get clear on what you want.

Take some time to identify the specific details you want in your hairstyle. This allows for clarity and direction, for both of you.

Our hair resources will give you so many ideas. Whether you want tips on color, a new cut or style, bringing in your Secondary Energy, or just want photo inspiration through the hair galleries, we’ve got you covered on everything!

You’ll learn how to communicate with your stylist, what terms to use, and exactly what language will get you the color, cut, and style you’re looking for.

Knowing exactly what you want will help you come into alignment and attract the perfect stylist into your life!

TYPE TIP:

Type 1: You may see all the possibilities and get overwhelmed at this step. Remember that you’ll have many opportunities to try out all the new ideas. Pick one for now, and go from there!

Type 2: You may get stuck in this preparation stage, gathering all the details. Honor that natural tendency, and then move forward with confidence once you’ve made decisions.

3. Be proactive and ask around.

Start to notice other women’s hairstyles and be willing to talk with them about where they get their hair done. This is one of the best ways to find a hairstylist who you are going to love—especially if that woman’s hairstyle is exactly what you want. You can trust that if the hairstylist did it once, he/she can do it again for you!

Another idea would be to network with friends in the area. Whether you are at book club, yoga, or mom’s group, other women are always willing to discuss their hair experiences and their favorite salons and stylists.

Sarah, a Type 4 Lifestyle member, agrees: “After several bad back-to-back experiences at cost-saving salons, I was recommended to go to a stylist that a friend of mine had been going to for years. Best decision ever! She listened to what I wanted, and also put in her experienced input as to how she could tweak it to be even better, and it was perfect. She charged more than where I was going before, but I quickly learned that when it comes to hair, you get what you pay for. She’s been my stylist for over 13 years. So glad I made the change to invest in myself!”

If you are not the type of woman to just go up to someone you see in the grocery store and talk about hair, then I would suggest using online resources.

Ask in your local Facebook groups, or research salons and look at their ratings online. If a salon is established, it will often have an online presence and reviews given by previous clients. See if they have an Instagram account too. This will give you a good idea about whether the salon is right for you.

Rachel, a Type 3 Lifestyle member, shared: “I found my perfect stylist by posting a photo of the hairstyle I was wanting on a local FB page for my city and asking for recommendations. The first recommended stylist I contacted was honest & upfront about not cutting “short hair or pixie cuts”, so I asked for HER recommendation. Bingo! I found my stylist based on her recommendation.”

TYPE TIPS:

Whether you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert, all Types will find their own way to carry out Step #3. Do what feels comfortable and natural for you, as well as know when it might be time to step out of your comfort zone!

4. Once you find a salon, ask to schedule a consultation with a hairstylist.

This is normally a 20 or 30-minute appointment and is well worth the money, especially as you get the opportunity to be in the hairdresser’s space and energy. You’ll be able to feel whether he/she is willing to listen to you. You can also see what feedback they have to give and how supportive they are of you and your choices. From there, you can choose whether to move forward with that stylist.

Tara, a Type 1, has had great experiences with these meetings: “I walk in and ask for their resident master stylist, and then I’m extremely clear and firm about what I need. If I don’t think they’re going to listen to me, I’m prepared to walk out (kindly, of course).”

She makes a good point. If the stylist was not exactly what you were hoping for, you can thank them for their time and not feel any obligation to return. Then, just start the process over again.

You can do this!

Before you know it, you’ll have met your new stylist! This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship that you consciously created.
