5 Easy Tips to Help You Not Dress Like a Grandma As You Get Older

From Gran to Glam: How to Look & Feel Less Frumpy

You’ve heard me say, “Grandma is a role, not a style.”

But as so many women reach their 60s and 70s, they default to fashion trends that leave them feeling tired and frumpy. It’s typical that women feel as though they have to adapt to a certain fashion style, but it often doesn’t make them look or feel their best.

I am a grandmother of 11 grandchildren between the ages of 6 mos to 12 years. When I first became a grandma at 49, I made a conscious decision that I wanted to be a wonderful grandma who knew her grandchildren well and created deep-lasting bonds with them.

I also made a conscious decision to stay true to myself in my appearance and style. That being a grandma was a role, not a style. I have been more successful at that than I ever thought was possible 12 years ago. My style has evolved to be more true to me than at any time in my life.

I love the way I look and feel in my clothes every day. I’m not trying to look younger, I’m just choosing to be me. There is evidence it’s working, as my grandchildren have told me that any time they see leopard print, they think of me!

6 Tips to Help You Not Look Like a Grandma

  1. Keep your hair fresh and updated.
  2. No more tight-rod perms! Set your hair free and try something new. As you do, notice what feels great on you. DYT Type 1 Expert, Marcy avoided “old lady hair” by choosing something that felt more light and fun—true to her animated and bubbly nature.

But you don’t have to be a Type 1 woman to have a hairstyle you love. In fact, I’ve created a whole gallery of ideas to inspire you: Dozens of Haircuts and Hairstyles for Women Over 50

  3. Keep your shoes current.
  4. How old are your shoes? If they’re outdated or drab, they could affect how you feel. Women find that shoes can make or break their outfit. Let your shoes be a unique expression of you and the message you want to send to the world.

  5. This goes for accessories too!
  6. If your accessories were in style 20 years ago, chances are they will age you now. We recently brought back accessories to the Dressing Your Truth Store to help make shopping easier for you! Now you’ll know if your accessories are perfect for you.

  7. Wear what makes you feel great.
  8. Don’t be afraid to tweak your style when it’s needed. Be open to changes so you can feel great. Follow your heart and be comfortable in your own skin.

In our Lifestyle membership, we offer new StyleInspire boards twice a week where you can see what’s trending—true to your Type of beauty.

  9. Dress your truth!
  10. Dressing Your Truth is so empowering! We teach that Dressing Your Truth is not an age-specific system, but rather a guide to creating your true style at any age in life!

Type 1 – Bright & Animated

“I am a Nana to a tribe of 16+. At age 68, I have been dressing my truth every day for about three years and no-one ever thinks I look my age.
Living my truth every day combined with dressing it, keeps me looking as young as I feel!”

Type 2 – Soft & Subtle

Lisa, a Type 2 woman

“I love being an Oma! Number 2 is on the way! As a Type 2 grandparent at 50 years old, I don’t think about my style any differently since my grandson was born. I live my truth in my style an how I relate to him. There are lots of snuggles, reading, and playtime on the floor. I feel like joy makes us look and feel younger!” Lisa, a Type 2 woman

Type 3 – Rich & Dyanamic

Leah, a Type 3 woman

“Give yourself a little self-care for your mind, body, and soul! DYT gave me permission to do that! I am a 60-year old Type 3/2!” Leah, a Type 3 woman

Type 4 – Bold & Stunning

Dressing Your Truth can make you feel more alive again! In fact, when you mis-Type yourself, it can actually age you! Here is Peg’s story:

Peg, a Type 4 woman

“Today, I turn 65. I have been following DYT for more than three years and I was totally convinced that I was a Type 2. I was all in! Everything in my closet was Type 2.

“About six months ago, I realized I was feeling drab, washed out, and I had no energy. Well, I was getting older, I rationalized. I didn’t really love any of my clothes, and every time I would see a picture of myself, I would just sigh and remind myself that, after all, I am an ‘old grandma,’ so I can’t really expect to look fabulous, can I?

“Gradually, I began to wonder if my secondary Type 4 could actually be my primary. When I tried on the Type 4 blouse in this picture, the first thing I thought was, ‘My eyes are blue again!’ (They had been looking so drab and gray). My next thought was, ‘Who is this woman with beautiful skin?’ (I have never had pretty skin).

“So this ‘old grandma’ will celebrate the gift of years as a new beginning. I’m feeling healthier and more energetic than I have in a long time. I look forward to the future and its plethora of possibilities. I intend to live it with joy…while looking fabulous!” Peg, a Type 4 woman
