How to Be Nicer to Your Hair

Wouldn’t you love to be best friends with your hair?

No frustrating mornings in front of the mirror. No fussing with your style to get it to work.

Just happy, healthy hair that you trust and have a good relationship with.

Our hair is connected to how confident we feel expressing ourselves in the world. What if we could be friends?

You can do some easy things on a regular basis to develop your relationship with your hair and be able to call her your dear friend.

1. Treat your hair like your favorite article of clothing.

Imagine you get a new favorite shirt. You love it. You want to take care of it so it won’t stretch or fade.

Like your shirt, your hair needs to be washed on a gentle cycle. Be kind to your hair in the shower—careful not to pull or scrub too hard.

You might also hang-dry your shirt, rather than put it in the dryer. In the same way, try not to add unnecessary heat to your hair. Turn down the temperature on your flat iron or other tools. And sometimes, try to go to bed with your hair wet, rather than blow-drying it.

Just as you don’t want your shirt to fade, be careful with things that can cause your hair to fade, like products or the sun. If the sun can hurt your skin, it can also hurt your hair. When you’re outside for extended periods of time, wear a hat or use a leave-in conditioner. If you color your hair, choose products that won’t strip the color. Your hair is happy when you protect it from fading.

Be careful when brushing your hair because (like your favorite shirt), it can break if you pull too hard. Brush your hair from the ends of the hair and gently work up the strand to finally brush your roots. This puts the least amount of stress on your wonderful hair.

2. Allow your hair to express its energy.

Your hair has its own unique energy, life, and texture. You’ll love your hair best when you let that natural beauty show. When you support your hair in expressing its natural movement, your hair will be happiest.

3. Get regular haircuts.

Isn’t it amazing how you feel after a fresh haircut? Imagine how much happier your hair feels, too. It can breathe easier once the split ends are cut off. Regular haircuts are a great treat for you—and for your hair.

If you haven’t had a haircut in a while, schedule one soon!

4. Speak love.

What do you say to and about your hair?

As you get ready in the morning, consider telling your hair how grateful you are for her. Tell your hair how you appreciate the ease of styling her.

You may be happy to find that your hair responds! As you approach your hair with gratitude and love, you’ll be able to work together with your hair to create great styles that express you every day.

This is the year you deepen your friendship with your hair.

As you treat your hair kindly and allow it to express its natural energy, you will come to love your hair as never before. This is going to be the best year yet for you and your hair!
