Type 3 Accessories: Add Essential Edge to Your Look

There was such an amazing response to the Basic Essentials Wardrobe and 7 Essential Shoes posts, so I wanted to finish the series with accessories.

Accessories are so important when creating a dynamic look, and as Type 3s we often charge ahead and skip that particular detail. Well, I am here to tell you to slow down (only just a little bit) and get some accessories to polish off your look.

If you are just getting started with Dressing Your Truth, or have been on the journey for a while and are still feeling like something’s missing, I have a solution for you.

I’ve created a list of accessory items that I believe are essential in getting that fabulous look we are going for!

Necklaces (3)

1. Short necklace: (Substantial or Pendant)

A short, substantial necklace is the perfect go-to for making any neckline dynamic. You can wear a piece like this with pretty much anything!

A short necklace with an angled pendant goes great with a round neckline. This one has color to it which makes it more interesting. Don’t be afraid to add some color to your jewelry! It looks awesome when you do!

2. Long pendant:

A longer necklace with an angular pendant is great for wearing with a duster cardigan or if you want to pair your necklace with a scarf so that it peeks through. I personally love a little bit longer of a necklace, and my tip here is to make sure it isn’t too long. You don’t want to go too far beyond the breast line.

Beaded:

A necklace with some beadwork is a great way to get some color into your outfit. You could also do beads that have sparkle to it. Because let’s face it, every girl needs a little sparkle in her life, especially for dressing up for a night on the town. Make sure when choosing a necklace with some color and or bling that it’s in your Type 3 shades. Here are some great examples:

Earrings (4)

1. Substantial Stud:

Great for anything! Can be worn for your night out with a beautiful dress or make a T-shirt and jeans look amazing.

2. Medium/Large Dirty Gold

You’ll love the texture and dynamic quality this adds to any simple outfit!

3. Medium Colored:

Colored earrings are exciting! Pick up a pair like these in your favorite Type 3 shade.

Another great option is copper. Copper is unique because it’s a metal only Type 3s get to wear! It goes great with any shade in the red family, burgundy, wine, salmon, etc. I also like to wear it with turquoise blue.

4. Medium/Large Shiny Gold:

A traditional shiny gold will dress up an outfit but can also be worn casually. I like to wear it with my lighter shades during the spring and summer months.

Bracelets (3-5)

Bracelets add so much to your look! I feel naked without them. Here is a list of a few bracelet options that I cannot live without. I love mixing, matching and stacking!

A handful of stretchy bangles or beads for mix and match stacking:

Gold Bangle:

Watch (1)

Gold Watch:

A gold watch with a textured band is a must-have for every Type 3. Not only does it look great, but if you’re like me, you’re always short on time, trying to fit everything in! It takes too much time to find your phone or a clock. All you need to do is look down at your wrist—so easy!

Purses (2)

Small Shoulder Bag:

A small bag is good when you need to have a no-fuss experience, quick runs to the store, or while you are traveling.

Large Handbag/Tote:

A large tote is my go-to for an everyday purse. It can fit everything you need to get through your busy day! From snacks to your makeup bag. Carol even uses hers to carry her laptop! I love a good, large, substantial bag that can carry all the necessities and more.

Scarves (2)

Scarves are great for functional purposes as well as adding flavor to an outfit. I recommend having two in your accessory line up. A colored pattern scarf and an animal print scarf.

Belts (2)

Type 3s look great in belts, and they can add an edgy feel to your outfit. I recommend having two basic belts:

1. Skinny Belt

A skinnier belt for your belt loops is great, and it will add a textured detail to your look.

2. Thick Stretch Belt

This can be worn over a shirt, cardigan, or dress.

Hats

I am a hat girl and have several I wear on a weekly basis. Some Type 3s will prefer hats for only practical purposes, so see if you’re a Type 3 who likes hats as a fashion statement too. One idea is to get at least one for shading your face from the sun when needed! Here are some of the hats that have made my must-have list.

Textured Beanie (for the colder months):

Baseball Cap (for any time):

Fedora (fashion statement):

Large Brim (for sunny weather):

Rings

I LOVE rings! Fashion rings are great for making your look more current or trendy—plus they have great, inexpensive options if you’re not into fine jewelry!

Just stick to your key words, colors, and shapes! (P.S. Every girl gets diamonds!)

Here are some examples of a few different price ranges:

Headbands or Hair Clips

While I don’t really use them because my hair is so short, they look great with all different hair styles! Grab a few that are in your colors and textures, and you’ll be good to go! Here are a few examples:

There you have it! Use this essentials list as a place to start. What are some of your favorite jewelry and accessory pieces? Share your pictures in the comments below!
