Eye Shape Guide: How to Personalize Your Look by Knowing Your Eye Shape

There are 6 eye shapes. Which one do you have?

Your eyes are one of your very best features. So of course you want to accentuate them. When you become your own eye makeup expert, you learn how to enhance your eyes with a look that’s as unique as you are.

You can already imagine that when it comes to eyes, the color of your makeup is so important! Knowing which colors are correct for your eyes is a large part of creating this unique style.

But it goes beyond colors. Knowing exactly where to apply your makeup based on your eye shape is what will personalize your look even more.

It’s important to realize that just because you’re a certain Type of woman, it doesn’t mean you will have the eye shape that fits that Type.

For example, you can still be a Type 2 woman even if you don’t have hooded eyelids.

And you can still be a Type 3 woman even if you don’t have deep-set eyes.

Or maybe you’re a Type 4 with a combo eye shape.

Eye shape is just one aspect of your Type of beauty.

I’m Carol Tuttle, creator of Dressing Your Truth. I’ve created this Eye Shape Guide to help you identify which eye shape you have and how to apply makeup in a way that makes your eyes stand out in the most beautiful way.

Makeup Tips for 6 Different Eye Shapes:

1. Deep-Set Eyes

Deep-set eyes have more prominent brow bones and the eyes are set deeper into your face. Place your finger on your eyebrow and cheekbone–if you don’t touch your eye, you have deep-set eyes.

You’ll want to brighten your eyes rather than accentuate the crease you already have.

Eye Shadow tips:

  • Apply the lightest shadow to your lid to brighten up natural shadowing.
  • Add a mid-tone shadow above your crease and onto the brow bone.
  • Apply the darkest or accent shadow to the very outer corner while avoiding carrying it into the crease and lid.
  • Sweep the accent shadow underneath the lower lash line.

Mascara and Eyeliner tips:

  • Apply lightly to outer corners, avoiding heavy eyeliner as this will close your eyes.
  • While applying mascara, pull the lashes to the outer corner to make the eyes appear more open.
  • Your lashes probably graze your brow bone so be sure to use mascara that doesn’t smudge.

2. Hooded Eyes

Hooded eyelids have an extra fold of skin that covers the crease in your eyelid. You can’t see much of your lid when your eyes are open.

You’ll want to open your eyes up and create brightness.

Eye Shadow tips:

  • Apply the lightest shadow to the inner corner up over the crease and up to the brow bone.
  • To help your eyes appear more open, apply the mid-tone shadow to the outer half of your eye from the base of the lid and up over your crease. Apply it higher than you think. You want a bit of shadow peeking through when you open your eyes.
  • Apply the darkest or accent shadow along the outer corner lash line and up to the crease.

Mascara and Eyeliner tips:

  • Since you’re tight on space, apply eyeliner on the wet line (the skin right underneath the lashes closes to the eyeball). This will also make the lashes appear fuller and open your eyes even more.
  • Avoid too thick of an application of eyeliner at the inner corner of the eyes as this will close the eyes. You can even start applying eyeliner on the outer corner of the eye–be sure to blend it in so there isn’t an obvious start and stop line.
  • Line the full lower wet eye line. Hooded eyes benefit from well-defined lashes. Use 2-3 coats of mascara on lashes to open up the eyes.

3. Prominent Eyelids

Prominent lids mean that when you open your eyes your lids are clearly visible. Your larger eyes give you more lid space to play with.

You’ll want to use the space effectively in order to add depth to your eyes.

Eye Shadow tips:

  • Apply a light shadow all over the lid and up to the eyebrow.
  • Apply mid-tone and darker shadow onto your lid with the darkest shadow closest to the lash line.
  • Add a little bit of your lightest shadow to the center of the lid to balance the light at the top of the eye.

Mascara and Eyeliner tips:

  • Apply eyeliner along your upper lash line while decreasing in thickness as you reach the inner corner of your eye. Stick with darker colors for eyeliner.
  • Apply mascara as normal. You don’t need too much as more coats will create a heavy quality that may be undesirable.

4. Monolid Eyes

Monolid eyes have a flat surface without much of a crease. If this is you, you’ll want to create definition and dimension to the flat surface.

Eye Shadow tips:

  • Create dimension by using your darkest shadow closest to the lash line and work up to lighter shadows by your brow.

Mascara and Eyeliner tips:

  • Apply thick eyeliner across the entire lash line. It will look thinner when you open your eye.
  • Apply an even thinner line on your lower lash line.
  • Extend the eyeliner just a bit over the outer corner of the eye for a winged look, which can be very flattering on monolid eyes.

5. Close-Set Eyes

Close-set eyes are less than one eyeball width apart. This can be a secondary feature to your dominant eye shape found above.

You’ll want to open up the eyes so they appear more evenly spaced.

Eye Shadow tips:

  • To make your eyes appear more open, apply the lightest shadow or a highlighter in the inner corner of your eye.

Mascara and Eyeliner tips:

  • Apply mascara on the inner lashes and pull lashes toward the outer corner of the eye.
  • Apply eyeliner on the outer corners of the upper and lower lash line.
  • Add a light shade of eyeliner to the wet line of the inner corner of the eye to open up the eyes even more.

6. Wide-Set Eyes

Wide-set eyes are more than one eyeball width apart. This can be a secondary feature to your dominant eye shape found above.

You’ll want to bring the eyes together to appear more evenly spaced.

Eye Shadow tips:

  • Do the opposite of close-set eyes, above. Avoid using too much light eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eye.

Mascara and Eyeliner tips:

  • Line your entire eye with eyeliner
  • When applying mascara, pull your lashes toward the inner corner of your eye.

Realize as well that you might have a combination of eye shapes. Try to determine which is your more dominant eye shape and which plays more of a supporting role.
