Let’s create your Energy Draping kit together so you can begin Energy Draping for yourself!
In this how-to we’ll guide you through the process of creating your very own draping kit, a key tool in learning your Beauty Type in Energy Profiling. Join me, Carol Tuttle, and my daughter Anne as we walk you through this process step-by-step.
Before we get started on your draping kit, let’s review what Energy Draping is.
What is Energy Draping, and how does it work?
Unlike traditional color draping, which focuses on seasonal palettes, Energy Draping goes deeper by aligning colors with your unique Beauty/Energy Type. In Dressing Your Truth, we identify your Energy Type within the Energy Profiling system. Each of the four Types has a corresponding color group based on tint, tone, shade, or hue.
Over the years, I’ve experimented with colors from each of the four Types to see if they could help determine your Energy Type. Last year, I wondered what color could be the most revealing in a draping process. I discovered that color—it’s yellow! Energy Draping involves draping the color yellow from each of the four color groups to observe how each one interacts with your energy. This method helps determine the Energy Type by observing the vibrational interaction between the person and the color.
My Facebook and Instagram reels show many examples of Energy Draping in action. To get a deeper understanding, watch the unedited videos in Energy Draping Deep Dive: Confirm or Reaffirm Your Type.
Your Energy Draping Kit How-To
(00:10) Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Tools: Bring along your most important tool, the Style Kit. This will help you identify which yellow aligns with each Energy Type.

Location: Visit your local fabric store. Anne and I chose a popular store in our neighborhood, known for its extensive collection of colors.
Focus on Yellow: We’re using yellow exclusively in our Draping Kit because it has the most revealing effect in helping you see someone’s Energy Type.
(1:04) Step 2: Selecting the Fabrics
Scan the Aisles: Begin by exploring the aisle with the most yellows. Start by pulling out the Style Kit to find an overall harmony rather than an exact match. Look for connections between the fabric and the Style Kit colors.
Choose Two Bolts per Type: Type 1 Tint: Look for bright, light, and fresh yellow. Type 2 Tone: Choose more muted, soft, and subtle yellow. Type 3 Shade: Opt for rich, dynamic, and earthy yellows. Type 4 Hues: Select bold, saturated, and clear yellow.
Tips for Fabric Selection:
- Stick with solid colors to avoid additional movement from patterns.
- Choose fabrics with a flat finish, avoiding sheen or too much texture.
- Ensure the fabric’s color resonates and harmonizes with the Style Kit.
(3:07) Step 3: Narrowing Down Your Choices
At the Cutting Table: Once you have two bolts for each type, it’s time to narrow them down. Use the Style Guide and Pattern Guide to determine which fabric harmonizes best with each Energy Type.
(4:42) Step 4: Setting Up Your Space
Now that you have narrowed down your yellow fabrics, it’s time to set up the space for your Energy Draping.
- Set up in front of natural light, such as a window, to observe the true effect of the colors.
- Use a mirror to view the draping from multiple angles.
- Have another person with an objective opinion to assist you.
(6:58) Step 5: Energy Draping
Anne and I demonstrate the process together so you can see how it works and what to look for.
The Process:
- Drape each fabric over yourself or your subject, starting with your Type 1 yellow tint.
- Observe the face for any changes—look for clarity, evenness, smoothness, and radiance.
- Eliminate the fabric that looks the worst first.
- Continue narrowing down until you find the fabric that brings out the best in you, aligning with your Energy Type.
What to Look For:
Type 1: The Bright, Animated Person
- Correct Yellow: Skin looks vibrant and alive; eyes sparkle.
- Incorrect Yellow: Skin appears heavy, drained, and dull.
Type 2: The Soft, Subtle Person
- Correct Yellow: Skin looks smooth and blended; eyes look relaxed.
- Incorrect Yellow: Skin appears washed out and tired.
Type 3: The Rich, Dynamic Person
- Correct Yellow: Skin looks rich and even; features appear defined.
- Incorrect Yellow: Skin looks harsh; features appear overly textured.
Type 4: The Bold, Striking Person
- Correct Yellow: Skin looks clear and vibrant; features are striking.
- Incorrect Yellow: Skin reflects gray or redness; features appear dull.
Tips for Accurate Draping
- Remove any jewelry as it may clash with the colors.
- Minimal makeup is recommended for an unbiased view.
- Ensure your hair is pulled back to see the full effect on your face.
- Fold fabrics in half if sheer to avoid patterns showing through.
Creating your own draping kit is fun and enlightening. By using the Style Kit and following these steps, you can identify the yellows that best reflect your Energy Type. This journey isn’t just about finding the right colors—it’s about embracing your true nature and living authentically.
Now you’ll be able to confidently drape yourself, your friends, and your family. This process is the same for women, men, and children.
